China has remade a live-action drama version of the famous manga “The Prince of Tennis” by Takeshi Konomi which was broadcast last year, this year they are currently airing a season 2. Since they have a season 2 which means season 1 was pretty good so that’s the reason why I’m watching it now, currently up to episode 7.
As a big fan of “Prince of Tennis” and have read the manga and watch the anime many times, I can say this live-action drama of the China version pass as a sport drama but fail as a remake of “Prince of Tennis”. The good thing about the drama is that it doesn’t seem a very low budget drama and the tennis and effects seem pretty good. The storyline is also going according to the manga but of course not exactly but still very close on how it was in the original so I have no complain on that.
The biggest problem is probably the character’s personality and characteristics which made the story more interesting and liked. Tezuka doesn’t have its coolness look and the vibe that the other members are afraid of him. At times he seems a bit weak, like how he’s afraid to approach Ryoma and things when he has to decide. Fuji doesn’t have the mysterious, devilish and calm feel which first attracts me into making him as my favorite character. Like the time when Yuta was in the school ranking competition and he lost his calmness as Yuta was losing. But still the guy playing as Fuji is quite a hottie so Fuji is still my favorite character in this drama. Eiji is not even Eiji, he’s not clingy to Oishi and not as friendly/jumpy/hyper as it was in the original, and also why does he always fight with Kaidoh? Ryoma’s arrogant is too over here and he’s missing the playful heart like “Umm… This look interesting” feel, same goes for Fuji. Inui is just missing the confident that the original has sometimes, like the time where he was afraid to approach Ryoma and fooled Eiji to do it first so that he has more confident. I guess Momo and Kaidoh were portrayed more close to the original.
Story wise there were missing a few important points, such as Ryoma being left hander but also a right hander. But I do understand that it’s hard to find an actor who fits the role and is a lefty. Inui’s special drinks was missing, at least I haven’t seen any so far, this adds a lot more humor in the story and also make everyone work harder during training. Instead of talking too much about Ryoma, Kaidoh and Inui in the first few episodes, they should have showed Seigaku’s powers. As it was said Seigaku was the runner up in the National competition and Tezuka, Fuji is the strongest in the team.
Although I have many complains but it is indeed an okay drama to watch. I hope it will get a lot better when Ryoma starts to have a better relationship with the team. One thing I don’t get is they have the Seigaku jacket why not the shirt as well? When I frst saw it I thought it was anoter team.
The guy who played as Fuji is really hot! Actually a lot of the guys in this drama are quite good-looking, but some don’t look at good in the drama. I was surprise to see how better-looking Inui and Tezuka in photos probably they had makeup and was dressed up properly.
I’m planning to keep watching this drama and most probably will watch season 2 as well.
