The story started with Maebara Keiichi who moved to a small village named Hinamizawa. Within a month time he got used to the place and made friends with Rena, Mion, Satoko and Rika. As the days pass Keiichi start to suspect that there’s something unusual about Hinamizawa. When Keiichi learns more about Watanagashi, a festival in Hinamizawa, strange things started to happen around him like murders and disappearances also the deadly curse from Oyashiro-sama.
After watching the jdrama “Gakko ja Oshierarenai” I started to like Maeda Gouki, actually I notice him in “Gokusen 3” just that I didn’t know his name until I saw him in “Gakko ja Oshierarenai”. While I was getting information about him I came across one of his newly movie “Higurashi no naku koro ni”, from the look of the cover I can tell it’s creepy and I’m not a big fan of creepy movies. But at the end because Maeda Gouki was the main lead so I had a go with it.
Surprisingly this movie is pretty well known because of the anime was quite popular. At first I thought it was a low production movie with unpopular casts and with that thought I didn’t expect too much from the movie. It was great that I didn’t watch the anime nor heard about the anime beforehand because often comparing to original ruin the mood of watching the movie.
At the start of the movie it didn’t show much of the creepiness as they portray more of the good relationship that Keiichi have with Rena and Mion when they both showed him around the village. For split seconds it looks as if both of the girls have fallen for Keiichi since they were so clingy towards him. But I doubt they would have romance for a horror/mystery movie.
Since it’s a horror/mystery movie and seeing the other movie cover that Maeda Gouki was covered in blood I knew that blood scene will soon show up. Finding that there’s something wrong with Rena and Mion, Keiichi wishes that it was a dream so he ate the lunchbox that was made by them. Just when he ate it the needle punches through his cheek and it really got me screaming. If that happened to me I wouldn’t even be going to school the next day and Keiichi just pretends nothing happened and attend class as usual. That’s just the start of the blood scene and there’s more blood towards the end.
There was another creepy part where Rena was outside of Keiichi’s house trying to get in and Keiichi shut her hand in the door. The evil laughing of Rena was creepy as well. Keiichi fainted and when he woke up the two girls were beside him. I can sense that there’s something wrong when the two girls started stripping his shirt off and giving him a message. I wasn’t wrong the girls were trying to inject some kind of drugs into him. The really bloody scene appeared when Keiichi woke up finding himself covered with Rena’s and Mion’s blood. He ran off while trying to make a phone call to Ooishi, the policeman, he was cursed and scratching his throat with his own hands. That scene was well filmed as I thought it’s gross.
At the end Ooishi found some notes that was taped behind Keiichi’s clock, although I don’t quite understand the actual meaning of those notes but I guess it just shows that Keiichi sensed that something might happen to him. So the movie left off with an unknown ending whether it’s the curse or human cause of the deaths. But from some websites I think there’s going to be a continuation of this movie and I am looking forward to the 2nd movie.
I totally recommend this movie for people who loves creepy movies, although most of the time I think live-actions are a disappointment but not this one maybe the reason is because I haven’t seen the anime before. Overall I really enjoyed watching this movie with Maeda Gouki starring as the main lead.
