Finally I watched this movie, I was so excited about this movie ever since I heard news about it. I’ve seen Death Note 1 & 2 and I totally love it, and Kenichi Matsuyama as L is just so cool. In this movie there’s nothing related to Death Note, Kira or Shinigami it is just a plain case where L’s the main character. This period of time happen during the 23 days before L dies, which connects back to Death Note ~The Last Name~ where L died at the end of the movie.
The start of the movie has a little bit of connection to Death Note ~The Last Name~, the part where Watari and Misa got out of the lift and Watari died from heart attack as his name was written on the Death Note by Kira. After the death of Watari it goes into this story about the bio-terrorist group that aims to wipe out much of humanity with a virus with ten times the infectiousness of Ebola, taking a boy, the sole survivor of its use in a village in Thailand, and a junior high schooler named Maki Nikaido under his wing.
This movie somehow turned out into an action adventure movie where as the Kira case it’s more of a mind game. As before we don’t see much of L doing much physical exercise so it was totally refreshing to see him running away to protect the two kids. It feels weird as L looks like a person who does things slowing and not much big movements but in this movie he’s acting running (in a weird way).
The movie is pretty much like Mission: Impossible 2 with an existence of a manufactured, lethal virus and its attempts to be weaponized by eco-extremists in a bid to cleanse the Earth from mankind. So I didn’t anything special in the story expect that the hero is L. I guess if you’re a fan of L you must see this movie as there’s more of his goofy action to be seen and shows more of his inner self although he’s expressionless. There’s part where I find it cute like for the first time L trying to make the kids happy by giving them sweets but fail.
The 2nd time was Maki and that expression after he got rejected was just so cute.
I find it amusing to see him typing, how could someone type like that using 2 fingers with big movements moving up and down.
The virus effects were done very real and kind of digusting to watch, there’s pretty much of those scenes at the start and towards the end of the movie. The FBI who is replacing Watari to protect them was also affected by L’s weird behavior.
So practically I wasn’t much drawn into the storyline but more of L, the ‘human side’ that they are trying to reveal which was not revealed in the Death Note series. It is sure helps the L fans to know more about him which is a good thing. Such as the scene that he finally straighten his back to please Maki and at the end of the movie for the Thai boy, which he named Near at the end. So this does link back to the original where Near might over take L’s place as he’s a mathematic genius. I guess this would be the end of the Death Note and L series. Don’t think they would continue making another movie for this anymore.

LOL… L looks cute here… this was the best movie among the Death Note series…
